WHAT YOU SHOULD NEVER WEAR TO A JOB INTERVIEW

When attending a job interview, it’s important to make a good first impression – and your physical appearance is a big part of this.

As well as giving the right answers and showing your skills, how you present yourself is a chance to show that you’re a credible candidate who is determined to get the job.

Choosing the wrong clothes for a job interview can seriously hinder your chances of getting the job. So, here are some of the things you should never wear to an interview.

1. Anything that’s too casual

Even if the job itself allows casual clothing, it can still look unprofessional to turn up to an interview in really casual clothing.

Instead, you should always aim to look smart, and that means no jeans, hoodies, leggings, t-shirts, tank tops or strapless tops, flip flops, sneakers, or sportswear.

2. Open-toe shoes

Wearing open-toe shoes like sandals is a bit too informal for a job interview, and we recommend opting for a more formal alternative.

Some examples of appropriate footwear for a job interview include flats, closed-toe heels or boots made from higher-quality materials like real or fake leather.

3. Clothes that don’t fit properly

Clothes that fit properly are essential for an interview, as they are more flattering and make you look better instantly, whatever you’re wearing.

Make sure any clothes you choose aren’t too loose or too tight. Invest in some nicely tailored clothing that fits well, as this will give a great first impression in job interviews.

4. Clothes that are too distracting

When you’re interviewing for a job, you don’t want to wear clothes that are too distracting, as you want the focus to be on the conversation and why you’re right for the position.

Unless it fits in with the company culture – if you’re interviewing in a creative industry, for instance – you can give a good first impression by choosing a more neutral look.

This means avoiding bright prints, lots of loud or chunky jewelry, and other items of clothing, shoes, or accessories that could divert attention away from the interview itself.

5. Too many bright colors

Another thing that can be distracting and inappropriate in an interview is wearing loads of bright colors. In moderation, wearing a bright color can be acceptable. However, if you plan to do this, make sure the overall design of the outfit balances it out.

For example, if you wear a bright-colored shirt, you should pair it with a black suit and classic accessories and make sure you avoid poorly fitting or casual clothes.

6. Excessive makeup

Although it’s important to look your best, be careful not to overload on makeup, as this can look unprofessional. It’s better to aim for a fresh, natural look without looking too done up.

Keep your look as simple as possible. You can wear enough to look smart and polished, but avoid dark eyeshadow, heavy foundation, bright lipstick, or other things that look over-the-top, as this is better for a night out, rather than a work environment.

7. Wearing too much perfume

It’s important to stand out in an interview, but wearing loads of perfume or body spray isn’t the way to go about it. It can be overwhelming and potentially distract the interviewer.

If you do wear perfume, make sure you use it sparingly, as the interviewer might not like it, especially if it’s a strong scent, and you don’t want it to be the first thing they notice about you.

8. Clothes that don’t fit with the company culture

Last but not least, make sure the clothes you choose for your interview fit the company culture. Being dressed in a way that’s not appropriate for the workplace can affect your confidence, and it could make the hiring manager doubt whether you’re the right person.

If you do your research ahead of time, you can easily avoid this problem. Checking out the company’s dress code first shows that you care enough to do some research first and that you’re willing to adapt to how people do things at the company.

To do this, start by checking the company’s website or social media to see how other employees dress. Or, have a look at employees coming out of the building if you can.

It’s important to check this first so you don’t show up overdressed or underdressed. Once you know what’s normal at this workplace, dress in a way that’s slightly more formal. For example, if the dress code is smart casual, you should wear a suit. Or, if it’s very casual, you should still avoid jeans and trainers, but make sure you’re not overdressed either.
