HOW TO DEAL WITH A TOTALLY BORING JOB

Do you feel bored at work? Every job has its slow periods. It happens! But, if you find yourself feeling fed up often, it might be time to make some changes. 

Maybe you’re in a mind-numbing desk job and need more stimulation. Or, perhaps you feel like you’re working on a project or team that is underutilizing your skills. 

Whatever your situation, if you find yourself in a bit of a slump, there are plenty of things you can do to make your work days more bearable.

If you’re not ready to leave and find a new job just yet, here are some simple steps you can take to help minimize that boredom. 

 

1. Stop watching the clock 

When you’re in a boring job, it’s totally natural to keep checking the time. We all do it! However, constant clock-watching can make the day seem so much longer and can increase boredom. 

If this is something you find yourself doing at work, it’s time to take action. When you’re working, avoid looking at the time if you can. And, if it’s something you struggle to do, considering getting rid of your clocks, watches, or other time-keeping devices so you’re not tempted! 

 

2. Get involved in new projects 

A common reason for boredom is not being challenged enough. If you feel like your current responsibilities aren’t keeping you interested, you could consider taking on some new ones. 

Start by identifying which tasks are most boring to you. Then, talk to your bosses about getting involved in new or difficult projects or helping colleagues with some different tasks. 

Also, a great way to alleviate boredom is to find subject areas that are interesting to you and spend time developing these skills. By taking time to learn skills that relate to your job, you might find that you are able to progress in your company faster. 

 

3. Consider switching departments 

If you’re really bored of your job, why not think about making a change? You don’t necessarily need to leave your company to do this; there might be the option to switch roles or departments. 

Once you’ve considered what inspires you and what you find interesting, take a look at internal job vacancies. If you work for a larger company, chances are, they’ll be some available. 

If not, try speaking to your manager to see if there are any positions available. This might be a different role in the same department, or it could mean moving to a completely different one. 

 

4. Take regular breaks 

A lot of people skip their breaks at work or eat at their desk. But, taking regular breaks is essential for your mental health and productivity – and it can help relieve boredom! 

When you’re at work, always take a lunch break and either buy a healthy meal or make one in advance. While on your break, you could go outside to get a change of scenery, or do something else you find relaxing like reading a book or listening to music. 

In addition to this, you should aim to take small, regular breaks throughout the day. Try a quick walk around the office or standing outside for a few minutes. It can be hard to focus on boring or repetitive tasks for long periods, and taking a short break can help you stay focused. 

 

5. Personalize your workspace 

Personalizing your workspace can help you feel more comfortable. And, although this may not get rid of boredom altogether, it can definitely make the day more bearable. 

Take a look at your workspace and think of ways you could adapt it. For example, if your chair is uncomfortable, try asking for a new one or bringing in a back support or cushions. Or, if it’s too hot or cold, speak to your manager about adjusting the heating or air conditioning. 

As well as this, you can bring in some personal touches to brighten up your space, such as photos, plants, calendars, funny notes, colorful stationery and other items. This can help you feel more at home and keep your brain engaged. 

 

6. Consider working from home 

If you feel really bored at work, working from home some of the time might help you feel more engaged. If your workplace allows it, find out if you can work remotely on some days. 

Although working from home comes with its own problems and distractions, having a change of environment can also help with boredom. If your productivity is lower at home, you can also try working from a coffee shop or other public space – this can really help with boredom! 

 

7. Look for a new job 

If you’ve tried all the steps mentioned here and you still feel bored at work, it might be time to move on to new challenges. Looking for a new job should be the last option, but it’s sometimes necessary. If your job is too boring to continue, it’s okay to move on!
